Much of Genre Fiction Lineage can be reused in a classroom handout, a book-group sheet, an article or another reference page. The terms depend on what kind of material it is, and every image and data file on the site carries a credit line that says which terms apply.
Charts and data tables: CC BY 4.0
The charts the site draws itself, including dated timelines, lineage strips, family-tree charts, scene maps and comparison tables, are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0). The CSV data tables published beside entries are released under the same license. You may copy, adapt and share them, including commercially, as long as you give credit.
Each chart and data file has a ready-made credit line beneath it. The general form is:
"[title]" by Genre Fiction Lineage, [page URL], licensed under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
Replace [title] with the title given in the credit line under the chart or file, and [page URL] with the address of the entry where it appears. Copying the line exactly as printed under the chart is the simplest way to get it right.
A link back to the entry is welcome, because it lets your readers check the sources behind the chart. It is a request, not a condition of the license.
Charts with a base map or other outside layer
Some maps are drawn over a base layer from elsewhere. That layer is credited separately, and its own terms apply to it. Where a map uses Natural Earth data, which is in the public domain, the layer is credited as:
Base map: Natural Earth (public domain)
Where a chart is built on material licensed under CC BY-SA, the chart is released under a matching ShareAlike license instead, and its credit line names that license.
Illustrations
Scene illustrations made for the site are labeled as illustrations and are not covered by CC BY 4.0. Each one carries this notice:
Illustration: Genre Fiction Lineage. Generated scene illustration — not a book illustration, photograph or historical record. No copyright is claimed in the generated imagery; if you reuse it, please credit "Genre Fiction Lineage".
The site claims no copyright in these illustrations. The request for credit is a request, not a condition. They show a scene only and should not be presented as a real book cover, a portrait of a real author or a historical image.
Third-party images
Book illustrations, engravings, photographs and historical maps from other sources are not the site’s to license. On the current pages they mainly fall into three groups: works in the public domain, works that a museum or library has released under CC0, and museum images licensed under CC BY 4.0. Each is credited under the image with its creator, year, source page and license or public-domain basis.
Reuse them on the terms in their credit line, not on this page’s terms. Where the credit line gives a public-domain basis, that basis was established for the United States, Germany and France; check the law where you are if you are elsewhere.
Some sources used in entries allow only non-commercial use. The site reports single facts from them with a link and republishes none of their text or images, so there is nothing of theirs here to reuse.
Quotations and translations
Public-domain texts quoted on the site can be reused freely. English translations of foreign-language quotations labeled “Genre Fiction Lineage translation” are released under CC BY 4.0 and can be reused with the credit line above. Short quotations from works still under copyright are used here under quotation rights and are not licensed to anyone; those rights stay with their holders.
Fonts
The site is set in Playfair Display, Lora and Space Mono, all used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
